Frequently Asked Questions
Thinking about learning Russian with me? Here are answers to some of the questions I’m most often asked. If there’s anything else you’d like to know, just get in touch - I’ll be happy to help.
Do I need to know any Russian before I start?
Not at all! Complete beginners are very welcome. We can start from the very beginning, including the Russian alphabet, pronunciation and your first words and phrases.
If you already speak some Russian, I’ll adapt the lessons to your current level and what you’d like to improve.
Are lessons online or face-to-face?
I offer online Russian lessons, so you can learn from home wherever you are.
Depending on location and availability, face-to-face lessons may also be possible. Please get in touch if this is something you’re interested in.
How do online Russian lessons work?
Online lessons are live, one-to-one sessions with me — not pre-recorded courses.
We’ll work together using video calling and digital learning materials. You’ll be able to ask questions, practise speaking and pronunciation, and receive immediate feedback throughout the lesson.
What will we cover in the lessons?
That depends on you!
Lessons can include:
-
Speaking and conversation
-
Reading and the Cyrillic alphabet
-
Pronunciation
-
Grammar
-
Vocabulary
-
Listening and comprehension
-
Russian culture and everyday language
I tailor lessons to each student rather than expecting everyone to follow exactly the same programme.
Do you teach complete beginners?
Absolutely. Many students find Russian intimidating at first, particularly the Cyrillic alphabet, but you’ll be surprised how quickly it begins to make sense.
We’ll take it step by step and build your confidence as we go.
Do I need to buy a textbook or other materials?
Not necessarily. I’ll let you know what you need and can recommend appropriate books and resources depending on your level. I also provide learning materials to support our lessons.
Do I need a Russian keyboard?
No. You don't need a special physical keyboard to type in Russian.
Russian can easily be added as an additional keyboard language on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, and I can help you get everything set up.
Can I learn Russian mainly for conversation?
Of course.
Some students want a detailed understanding of grammar, while others mainly want to speak and understand Russian confidently. We can adjust the balance of conversation, grammar, reading and writing around your goals.
Why learn with a native Russian speaker?
Learning with a native speaker gives you exposure to natural pronunciation, expressions and everyday Russian alongside the formal language.
I can also explain the cultural context behind the language and help you understand the difference between something being technically correct and something a Russian speaker would naturally say.
Can you tailor lessons to a particular reason for learning Russian?
Yes. People learn Russian for all sorts of reasons — travel, family and relationships, work, education, culture or simply because they enjoy the language.
Tell me what you want to achieve and I’ll tailor our lessons accordingly.
How much do lessons cost?
You can find my current lesson prices and options on the Pricing page.
If you're unsure which option is right for you, just get in touch.
What happens if I need to rearrange a lesson?
Life happens! If you need to change a lesson, please give me as much notice as possible.
How do I get started?
Simply get in touch and tell me a little about yourself, your current level of Russian (if any) and why you’d like to learn.
We can then discuss what you're looking for and find the best way to get started.
Still Have a Question?
Every student is different, so if there’s something I haven't covered here, please ask.
